When you think about moving to the United States, one of the first things you are likely to consider is the US green card. A green card holder has the right to reside and work in America. However, lots of immigrants confuse it with another term - US citizenship. So, we would like to clear up any confusion and explain how the two differ from each other.

There are many immigrants who have considered residing in the US permanently. It is essential for each one to establish lawful residence. For instance, you can become a lawful resident in the United States by having a petition submitted by a family member, an employer, or a spouse. By having contact with a knowledgeable immigration lawyer, you can get more information about taking the first step and getting a green card.

In many instances, a green card holder will have to wait more than a year before sending in an application for US citizenship. This is done via a process called naturalization. Additional ways of becoming a citizen include being born in America or being a child with parents who have become US citizens.

What are the benefits of being a lawful resident of the USA?

As a legitimate resident, you will receive a photo ID card, which will be green in color. This card works as proof that you have the privilege of residing and working in America throughout your life.

However, as a US green card holder, you will still have some limitations that US citizens do not have. You will not be permitted to vote in US elections. You cannot leave the country for extended amounts of time without potentially losing your green card. Government benefits will also be limited. Thus, US citizenship is the most beneficial status that you can receive under immigration law.

What privileges come with a green card?

Still, there are several advantages to owning a green card.

·       You have the option of leaving or entering the country freely at any time. However, you should take your card with you to show at the border. You will also need to keep track of how much time you spend outside of the country.
·       You will not have to pay expensive international student tuition for colleges and universities. So, you will save money with the use of this card.
·       You will be allowed to work in a US-based company. You may also start a business or become self-employed.
·       You will have the option of applying for US citizenship in the future. Depending on your nationality, you may be eligible for dual citizenship.
·       Many insurance agencies will accept a US green card when you apply for insurance.
·       You will gain the legal right to buy a car, a house, and several other things.
