How To Be One Of Canada’s New 1 Million Immigrants

Amy Smith / 4 min read
Recently, Canada’s government has announced its 3-year plan to bring more immigrants into the country, looking for a target of 1 million new immigrants within 3 years. This is partly in an effort to offset the increasing number of elderly in the country and will ambitiously mean that by 2020 around 340,000 immigrants will be allowed into Canada each year to accommodate the large amounts of Canadians that are due to retire in 2035 (around 5 million.)
Recently, Canada’s government has announced its 3-year plan to bring more immigrants into the country, looking for a target of 1 million new immigrants within 3 years. This is partly in an effort to offset the increasing number of elderly in the country and will ambitiously mean that by 2020 around 340,000 immigrants will be allowed into Canada each year to accommodate the large amounts of Canadians that are due to retire in 2035 (around 5 million.) With immigrants making up 21.9% of the population in 2016, this will rise in the next 3 years in line with the immigration proposals to see a 0.9% immigration increase across the country making Canada a good option for many potential immigration applicants.

Increased Diversity and Innovation
Another reason for the drive to promote new immigrants into Canada is the increased diversity and innovation when shifting the demographic which can help Canada become more diverse and aid with the decreasing birth rate it is experiencing. This latest push by the Canadian government offers a unique opportunity and the perfect time to apply for many immigrants, particularly those who could be fast-tracked due to skilled labour and in order to make your application more likely to be successful, you should consider which class of Visa you are going to apply for because it makes a difference. The different classes of the Canadian immigration system won’t all increase at the same rate as some are considered a higher priority and needed more than others. For example;

  • Protected persons, refugees or humanitarian causes will rise from 43,500 immigrants in 2017per year to 53,200 per year in 2020.
  • Family reunification with rise from 84,000 in 2017 to 91,000 in 2020.
  • Economic class will rise from 172,500 2017 to 195,800 in 2020.
As you can see, the economic class has a higher percentage and ratio of immigrants being allowed in and this is partly due to the increasing need for a younger workforce so this could be the best avenue to explore. Ensuring you have skills or education that you can prove to be useful could be the most valuable and therefore increase your chances of visa success and ensuring that family members come over on similar visas rather than family reunification can improve your chances further. While Canada have refugee statuses, your application will be smoother when applying through the economic class and this is what the latest immigration drive is really about, creating a new generation of Canadian citizens to enhance and improve while supporting the growing elderly.
